Camera Operations Lead
Surfline operates one of the world’s largest coastal camera networks, delivering real-time surf intelligence to millions of users daily. As Camera Operations Lead, you will own the performance, reliability, and expansion of our camera and weather station infrastructure across the Americas, with a focus on west coast markets beyond Southern California. Our systems operate in harsh coastal environments — salt air, wind, solar dependency, remote connectivity, and difficult access — where installation quality and rapid issue resolution directly impact uptime and the surfer experience. This is a high-impact hybrid role combining regional ownership, technical leadership, advanced troubleshooting, and selective hands-on field work.
Under Surfline’s “Work from Anywhere” policy, this role can be based anywhere along the Central to Northern California coast, ideally near Santa Cruz or San Francisco, with regional travel required to support field work.
What You’ll Do:
- Own uptime, reliability, and expansion performance for camera and weather station infrastructure across your region
- Serve as the primary technical authority for all regional camera and weather station systems
- Drive improvements that reduce downtime, increase install efficiency, and strengthen long-term infrastructure performance
- Coordinate field operations and provide oversight on work delivered by external partners to ensure installations and maintenance meet Surfline standards for quality, safety, and durability
- Provide technical direction and quality control across installation and maintenance work, ensuring strong execution without rework
- Step into the field as needed to support complex, high-priority, or time-sensitive installations and repairs
- Perform advanced troubleshooting across networking, ISP connectivity, power systems, and line-of-sight challenges
- Execute selective hands-on work, including camera installs, upgrades, repairs, and weather station maintenance
- Support remote diagnostics and respond to service issues with urgency to minimize downtime
- Maintain clear, accurate, and thorough documentation across all Cam Ops systems
- Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve camera-related issues and improve overall system performance
- Collaborate with global Camera Operations peers to meet and exceed regional goals
What We’re Looking For:
- 2+ years of hands-on field technician experience with IP cameras, networking, ISP troubleshooting, or similar infrastructure
- Strong understanding of IP networking fundamentals, line-of-sight, and remote diagnostics
- Experience coordinating or overseeing work delivered by third parties
- Highly organized with strong operational discipline
- Clear communicator who can represent Surfline standards in the field
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the region
- Self-starter who thrives both independently and within a distributed global team
You May Also Have:
- Experience installing and terminating Cat5/6 structured cabling to industry standards (BICSI a plus)
- Experience installing and maintaining off-grid solar systems (NABCEP or similar a plus)
- Experience with IP camera systems and related software
- Spanish language proficiency
- Passion for ocean-based activities and an instinct for what makes a great camera experience
Compensation and Benefits:
The base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000. In accordance with applicable state laws, the range provided is Surfline's reasonable estimate of the base compensation for this role. The actual amount may be higher or lower, based on non-discriminatory factors such as experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and location. In addition, Surfline offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package including 100% company-paid healthcare (medical, dental, and vision), a 401(k) plan and match, 'Use What You Need' PTO, and more.
